Things to do in Laguna Niguel
Laguna Niguel is a suburban city located in the San Joaquin Hills in the southeastern corner of Orange County, close to the Pacific Ocean, and borders the cities of Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, and San Juan Capistrano.
Laguna Niguel is known throughout the OC for its extensive park and trail system. Over one-third is public open space, as a result of the 1959 Gruen plan, and is divided between 31 city parks and 4 county parks. Drive through the scenic highways within landscape corridors, or choose your preferred method of getting around with the hiking, biking and horseback riding options through about 80 miles of non-motorized trails in Laguna Niguel.
The Laguna Niguel Regional Park includes 227-acres of an extensive trail network, ball courts and Laguna Niguel Lake, popular for fishing and boating enthusiasts. Laguna Niguel’s 4th of July fireworks show is held at the park every year. For the city's main public sports facilities, visit Crown Valley Park. On the west, Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park consists of over 4,000 acres of canyons, grasslands and riparian forests along Aliso Creek. Within these parklands are mature oaks, sycamores, and elderberry trees, two year-round streams, more than 30 miles of trails and many endangered plants and animals make this park their home, which is why this is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. This is part of the larger South Coast Wilderness, 22,000 acres of preserved open space in the San Joaquin Hills that also includes the larger Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Crystal Cove State Park outside the city limits.
One of the best things about living in Southern California is the vast amount of beaches all within an hour’s drive. There are beaches for surfing, camping, swimming, and shopping. Most people are familiar with the main beaches like Newport, Santa Monica, and Huntington. Still, many aren’t as familiar with the heavenly beaches in the less-traveled areas like Laguna Beach. Search for the 1,000 Step Beach, and even though finding it can be difficult, it will be worth it.
