We tend to have preconceived notions about regional interior design styles in the US. Coastal in New England. Traditional in the Midwest. Southwestern in the desert states.
But data from Google Trends paints a different picture. Furniture company Joybird looked at the most searched for interior design trends by state from June 2018 to May 2019. The results were surprising.
What They Found
By far the most popular style in the survey was industrial (12 states). The next most searched for style was vintage (6 states), followed by shabby chic (5 states). Minimalist, mid-century modern, and rustic tied with 4 states each.
In California, more people searched for Hollywood regency than any other style. It’s a glamorous look, characterized by glossy surfaces, bold patterns, luxurious details, and vanity features like glass closet doors and accent walls.
French country took first place in Arkansas, while New Yorkers went for urban modern—a fusion of contemporary, modern, and industrial styles.
Regional Differences
Vintage, a style that combines older pieces with more modern furnishings, was a hit in the Northeast. Industrial was big in the Midwest. Shabby chic, modern farmhouse, and rustic were the top choices in the South. The West went for industrial and modern styles.
